A degree in marketing can lead to a variety of careers in the world of business. Most employers require at least an Associate’s degree, while some actually prefer a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Generally speaking, the higher your level of education in marketing, the higher you can reach in job position and salary, regardless of where you choose to use your talents.
A marketing degree program will teach students about the closely related fields of advertising and public relations. They will also learn how to conduct and interpret market research. Product management is another key area that is included in most marketing degree programs. Required courses will typically include English, law, accounting, psychology, and business computer skills. All of these subjects are essential since they are each closely tied to the marketing field and business in general.
Because marketing is an essential part of modern business, a degree in it allows students to choose from many different areas in which to pursue a career. Staying within the marketing field, for example, a graduate can look towards becoming a marketing manager. These professionals determine specific strategies for the companies they work for, looking for new markets and promoting the companies’ goods and services.
Because marketing is closely tied to advertising, in most cases, a graduate might also work toward the title of account executive. These workers communicate information between the companies for which they work and the companies that advertise with them. They are responsible for finding new advertising opportunities, known as accounts, and maintaining existing accounts with advertisers.
Public relations is another field that is closely related to marketing, and a marketing degree can lead students to careers in this field such as public relations specialist. The PR specialist coordinates the public relations activities for a company. He or she is responsible for maintaining the corporate and public image of the organization through press releases, speeches, and even media interviews.
Graduates may also choose to work more on the creative side of the industry, with a title such as copywriter or illustrator. These are positions within the advertising creative team and require the worker to write and/or illustrate an advertising campaign to be pitched to an advertiser. One may even be involved in the actual production of the finished ad(s).
There is even a place in the retail market for marketing majors. They may choose from a wide variety of job opportunities, including buyer, department manager, store manager, or regional manager. These types of positions utilize the marketing skills that students have learned and apply them at the retail chain level. A buyer, for instance, is responsible for deciding what products a store or chain will carry. A department manager will help to decide how products are arranged within the department for maximum sales potential. The store manager will do much the same, but will coordinate for all departments within the store, while the regional manager will identify and implement marketing strategies for an entire chain of stores.
Marketing degrees prove to be beneficial for those who have the vision and open mind to consider all of the possibilities that they provide. Every business needs to be marketed to the public in some way, and with the variety of skills learned from a degree program such as this; graduates will be prepared to perform any number of the essential functions that their companies require.
